Supporting Democracy on St Helena: A Day with the Election Observation Mission

On Election Day 2025, Williams Taxis & Tours had the privilege of providing transport for the Election Observation Mission Team on St Helena Island. The team of seven international observers had a vital role — visiting every polling station across the island’s 47 square miles . Our role was to make sure they could get there smoothly, safely, and on time.

A Carefully Planned Operation

Working alongside a representative from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK) branch stationed on-island, we meticulously mapped out routes for three vehicles and drivers. The goal was clear: ensure all polling stations were covered without overlap, with no more than two observers present at any given station.

To keep things running efficiently, our drivers stayed connected throughout the day with a dedicated group chat. This ensured real-time updates, smooth handovers, and the ability to adapt as the day unfolded.

The Day in Motion

  • 8:30am start – All three vehicles rolled out, each with their assigned observers and routes.

  • By 1pm – The first half of the day’s polling stations had been successfully visited, even running slightly ahead of schedule.

  • Lunchtime – A quick break before heading out to complete the second half of the circuit.

  • Afternoon & Evening – The team continued their visits, with the final polling stations closing by 7pm.

One of our drivers was fortunate enough to end their day at the final station in Jamestown, while the others finished up at Blue Hill and Levelwood, where fog made the night drive a little more challenging. By 8:00pm, all observers had safely completed their mission.

Teamwork in Action

This operation was no small task: over 12 hours of continuous driving, covering every corner of St Helena while also keeping up with our usual commitments, including the regular 4pm and 5pm staff runs.

A big hats-off goes to:

  • Shane – our main and popular daily driver, with his steady professionalism.

  • Lucas – our part-time driver, who stepped in seamlessly as the third driver for the day.

Without their dedication, this logistical challenge would not have been the success it was.

A Job Well Done

At Williams Taxis & Tours, we pride ourselves on being more than just a taxi service — we’re planners, problem-solvers, and partners for our clients. Supporting the Election Observation Mission was a responsibility we were honoured to take on. The appreciation shown by the observers at the end of the day made every hour worth it.

Whether it’s an island tour, an airport transfer, or a complex logistical operation, our commitment remains the same: professional service you can rely on, anywhere across St Helena.
